Embark on the many local coffee shops of College Station
College Station has a wide range of local coffee shops from Sweet Eugene’s being founded in 1993 to Point of View coffee (POV), which opened up this past fall. Whether it is drip coffee or a nice pastry, there is a wide variety between what the shops have to offer.
To name a few of the shops around town, there is Babe’s Doughnut Co., The Brew, Gogh Gogh, Harvest Coffee Bar, Minuti, Lupa’s, POV, Sweet Eugene’s, The Tipsy Bean and The Village Café. While they all have similar amenities, coffee and study space, each has something different to offer.
Sophomore Accounting major Grace Ruby said she goes to coffee shops because it’s a fresh environment, unlike her home or going to an on-campus library, she said she enjoys the mood that they provide and the friendly vibes that the staff usually gives off.
“I like the couches at Sweet Eugene’s, it feels homey,” Ruby said. “At Lupa’s there are big tables, so I can really spread all my work out can focus. I like studying in a public place where I can meet new people or run into my friends.”
Senior biological and agricultural engineer Martin Jeffers said he likes going to study at coffee shops for many reasons; he can go to be alone and study or have the option to engage in conversation with other people, he said he really likes the shops where the baristas are open to talk about the products they are serving.
“There is so much you can do at coffee shops,” Jeffers said. “They provide an environment where you can study, have a conversation with a friend, set up a meeting or just kill time.”
Senior accounting major Nick Martin said he originally wanted to find a friendlier place to be able to do his schoolwork and soon found himself very interested in the third wave coffee scene due to the newfound knowledge from his friends.
“Once I learned more about [the science] of coffee, my appreciation for how coffee is made and the subtle nuances in flavor truly began to flourish,” Martin said. “The fun atmosphere and aesthetic doesn’t make a great coffee shop, the coffee and people are what can make it great.”
Martin said has made friends with many of the local baristas by striking up a conversation while they are making his drink, from this he has learned even more about coffee. Whenever he hears someone mention a new coffee shop, he makes it a point to try them out.
“It really took my friends showing me the beauty and complexity of coffee to begin seeking out shops on my own,” Martin said. “Good coffee can really bring a community together. Enjoying a cup of good coffee with somebody provides a special connection.”
Whether it is the complexity of the cup of coffee, the aesthetic of the shop or the delicious baked goods offered, each coffee shop around College Station brings something different to the table.
